Cortical hyperostosis secondary to prolonged use of prostaglandin E1.
Prostaglandin E1 (Alprostadil), a drug used for ductal patency in cyanotic congenital heart disease, comprises an essential part of the treatment of infants waiting for cardiac surgery in hospitals with no specialized medical staff or in situations of inadequate weight for surgery. Prostaglandin E1 (PgE1) can also be used in elevation of presurgical oxygenation status in more severe cases. The ...
متن کاملRandomized double-blind, multicenter study of prostaglandin E1 in patients with the adult respiratory distress syndrome. Prostaglandin E1 Study Group.
Prostaglandin E1 (PGE1) was compared to placebo in a 100-patient (50 PGE1, 50 placebo) randomized, double-blind, clinical trial to determine whether PGE1 therapy enhances survival of patients with adult respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) when infused through a central line at 30 ng/kg/min continuously for seven days. At 30 days postinfusion, 30 PGE1 and 24 placebo patients had died. Total dea...

متن کاملHaemorrheological effects of prostaglandin E1 infusion in Raynaud's syndrome.
Eighteen patients with severe Raynaud's syndrome had impaired deformability of erythrocytes, as measured by filtration through 5 micron diameter pores, compared with 19 healthy controls. The patients were given prostaglandin E1 (PGE1) or placebo by intravenous infusion for 72 h to assess the haemorrheological action of PGE1. Contrary to a previous report, PGE1 did not improve erythrocyte filter...
متن کاملProstaglandin E1 infusion in the hypoplastic left heart syndrome.
Aortic infusion of prostaglandin E1 in a moribund infant resulted in marked clinical improvement. Appropriate studies were conducted and the diagnosis of hypoplastic left heart syndrome was made. Although the outcome was unaltered, the improved clinical condition allowed us to exclude potentially curable defects such as aortic coarctation and interruption.
